Fraud Alert From The District Attorney

I receive monthly Faud Alerts from the Disctrict Attorney's office. They share the most current fraud schemes. I find these very informative and often times amazing. There is always someone coming up with a new scam....Jani

Dear Fraud Fighters:

I apologize for the delay in getting this month’s Fraud Alert to you. We had some momentary computer difficulties in the District Attorney’s office which prevented the normal delivery on the 15th of the month.

I have attached three items. One is a flyer announcing an upcoming Shred-a-thon scheduled for Saturday, May 10th. As those of you who have attended one of our Power Against Fraud seminars are aware, shredding all papers containing any information related to your finances, credit and banking account information as well as your health insurance and social security numbers is one of the best ways to prevent ID Theft. The Shred-a-thon is a great way to get rid of all those papers and boxes that have been piling up in your basement over the last few years.

I have also attached the monthly Fraud Alert, Pets, Romance, and Adoption, which focuses on Internet scams. I have attached a copy in Word format as well as in Adobe format. Adobe format is best to use if you are reproducing the alert in hard copy, however some computers are unable to open attachments in Adobe format.

As always, please let me know if you would like to schedule a Power Against Fraud seminar.

FRAUD ALERT!
From the Office of Denver District Attorney Mitch Morrissey

Pets, Romance, and Adoption

Information from the FBI 2007 Internet Crime Report reveals the top internet scams in 2007. Here is how they work:

Pet Scams: Consumers see an ad selling an adorable pet; they mail a check, or provide a credit card number, plus a little extra for delivery. Unfortunately, the fraudster gets your money and you don’t get the pet.

Funds Transfer Scams: If you are legitimately selling an animal or renting property, you may receive a check that is more than the agreed upon sale price. When you ask the buyer, he apologizes and asks if you can just deposit the check and send him the balance.
Adoption and Charity Scams: A spam email makes an urgent plea for a donation to a charity – perhaps even using the name of a legitimate charity. Unfortunately, your donation goes to a fraudster.

Romance Scams: You strike up a romance with someone you meet in an online dating or social networking site who lives in another country. Your new romance is anxious to meet you but needs money to cover travel expenses. Unfortunately, this may be just the beginning – typically the person ostensibly, ends up with an emergency hospital bill or being mugged which leads to a plea for more financial help.
